A guide to 03 telephone numbers
February 02, 2017
You’ve no doubt seen them around, but you might not be sure what they actually are.
03 numbers were introduced by Ofcom, the UK Telecommunications regulator, in October 2007. Since then they have been cropping up all over the country.
In 2015, Ofcom took steps to improve phone numbers and call charges to make them more customer friendly. It’s now free to call 0800 and 0808 numbers from a mobile as well as a landline. Which is good news for our wallets!
This move to end ‘rip-off’ calls also encouraged businesses to move from 084 and 087 numbers – which can be costly to call – to 03 numbers as a cheaper alternative to customers. What is an 03 number?
An 03 number is a non-geographical number, and an alternative to chargeable 084 and 087 aka service numbers. Calls to an 03 number cost no more than the regional 01 and 02 numbers – which can be free from landlines and mobiles as they’re often included in monthly minute bundles – whereas 084 and 087 numbers are not.
0333 numbers are available for any company or organisation in the UK; while 0300 and 0303 numbers are reserved for charities, not-for-profit organisations and public bodies respectively. If you’re unsure of your eligibility, then you can check Ofcom’s guidelines. Can I use an 03 number for my business?
Yes, absolutely. 0333 numbers are reserved for businesses and available for any company to use. This is regardless of where your business is based in the UK. So regardless of whether you have a smart new office, or work from your spare room, you can use an 03 business number. What are the benefits of an 03 number?
The calls made to an 0303 or 0333 number are charged at local rate. This cuts out the confusion associated with an 08 number, and gives your customers confidence that they’re being charged at the standard rate, with no hidden fees.
An 03 number can also give your business a national presence, appealing to a wider audience outside of your local area. How do I get an 03 number?
You can purchase an 03 number from a variety of vendors online, and use the number for as long as you need it.Can I get an 03 number from Moneypenny?
