Property sector urged to prepare for spike in calls as election looms

Outsourced telephone answering and live chat provider Moneypenny is urging the property sector to prepare for a spike in calls after the election as stamp duty thresholds are called into question.

Data from Moneypenny, which provides telephone answering and live chat services to more than 2,500 property businesses across the UK, showed that phone calls have increased by over one-third in the days and weeks following the previous General Elections. In 2015, there was a 34% increase in inbound calls on the Monday following the election compared to the previous four weeks.

Last week, it was confirmed that stamp duty will rise for first-time buyers next year if Labour wins the election. The party plans to allow a temporary tax break introduced by the Conservatives to expire. A party spokesperson said it would allow the threshold for stamp duty to fall back to £300,000 after it was raised to £425,000 in 2022 by Rishi Sunak, the then chancellor.

Samantha Jones, director at Moneypenny, is encouraging estate agents to ready themselves to provide extra support to clients and prospects over the coming weeks. She said: “Politics have a major impact on the property market all year round, but during election season, this is further compounded, and people reach out to experts for answers and support.”

Moneypenny data reveals heightened post-election activity as buyers and sellers seek professional advice on the new government’s impact on property transactions and whether they’re likely to face increased fees, delays, or, worse yet, broken chains and retracted offers.

Samantha continued: “Unusual and unexpected spikes in enquiries can leave estate and letting agents overwhelmed due to inadequate resources, which can lead to the loss of valuable opportunities and a damaged reputation. By investing in outsourced support, property agents can cover all bases and ensure every lead is captured – no matter the new challenges the election result presents.”
